After the National Socialist Machtergreifung, or "Seizure of Power", on 30 January 1933, the defunct Weimar Republics black-red-yellow colors were happily discarded for what many observers believed was Germany's most attractive flag. Influenced by World War One's Imperial Naval ensign, it did indeed fly from the stern of every ship in the Kriegsmarine, or German Navy. It also flew above every German government building until 1945 and is still generally recognized as the foremost representative banner of the Third Reich. - Marc Roland
